Sixteen Phila-area college field hockey programs received the Zag Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I, II and III National Academic Team Award. The award recognizes those institutions that achieved a minimum team grade point average of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2016-17 academic year. Swarthmore College ranked #1 among all DIII teams with a team GPA of 3.72. Temple University earned a spot in the Top-5 (tied at #5) among all Division I programs with a team GPA of 3.56.
“I am so proud of my team,” said Swarthmore Head Coach Lauren Fuchs. “They are a hard working group both in the classroom and on the field. What a great honor this is for our young woman.”
All six Phila-area Division I teams were honored including: Drexel University, La Salle University, Saint Joseph’s University, Temple University, University of Pennsylvania and Villanova University.
“Temple field hockey continues to make academics a priority and with this recent accomplishment, the dedication to academic success is evident and profound,” said Marybeth Freeman, Temple Head Coach. “We have set a standard of performance for ourselves that will ultimately result in becoming the best performing student-athletes we can be. I’m so proud of what our students have been able to accomplish this past fall season.”
Among Division II programs, West Chester University — the only Phila-area DII team — also earned this high honor.
Nine area Division III programs were recognized including: Arcadia University, Bryn Mawr College, Eastern University, Gwynedd Mercy University, Haverford College, Immaculata University, Swarthmore College, Ursinus College and Widener University.
