Seven players from Phila-area colleges were named to conference preseason teams including: Drexel’s Megan Wiest, Katie Bagdon and Tess Bernheimer; Saint Joseph’s Anna Willocks and Pepa Serrano; Temple’s Rachael Mueller and Villanova’s Francesca Bello.
Drexel junior forward, Megan Wiest earned a selection to the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association Field Hockey Preseason Team. Wiest was an All-CAA Second Team selection in each of her first two seasons and an NFHCA Division I All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team selection last year. The Northampton, Pa. native led the Dragons with 12 goals and tied for the team lead with 26 points in 2016. Her goal total was the most in a season since Lindsay McArdle scored 12 in 2012.
Junior Katie Bagdon and sophomore Tess Bernheimer were tabbed as honorable mentions. Bagdon was named to the CAA All-Academic Team a year ago and was named to the 2016 Field Hockey Championship All-CAA Team. The Holland, Pa. native started all 19 games as a sophomore and totaled two assists. Bernheimer was the first Drexel player to be named the CAA Rookie of the Year while also earning All-CAA First Team and All-Rookie Team honors in 2016. The Lewes, Del. Native notched six goals, four assists and 16 points on the year, the most since Christina Conrad notched the same figures in her rookie year back in 2011.
Saint Joseph’s junior forward Anna Willocks and sophomore midfielder Pepa Serrano were named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team. The two-time reigning Atlantic 10 Offensive Player, Willocks earned Second Team All-America honors after tallying 25 goals and 12 assists in 2016. The native of Palmerston North, New Zealand, was also named to the All-Conference First Team for the second year running, while claiming First Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region, ECAC All-Star, and Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Performer of the Year honors as well. Willocks has led the Atlantic 10 in goals and points in each of her two seasons on Hawk Hill, and has cracked the program’s all-time top tens in goals, assists, and points.
Serrano was named the league’s Rookie of the Year last season, following in Willocks’ footsteps from 2015, and also garnered a spot on both the All-Conference First Team and the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. She tallied five goals and added a team- and league-best 13 assists, tied for the second-most in a single season in program history, pulling in Second Team All-Region accolades as well.
Temple senior Rachael Mueller was one of 11 named to the 2017 Preseason All-BIG EAST Field Hockey Team in a vote by the
league’s eight head coaches. Mueller, a 2016 BIG EAST Second Team selection, was the Owls’ leading scorer last year. Mueller played in all 19 games as a junior, starting in 17, and scored a team-best 10 goals. Her total included three game-winning goals to tie for fifth among all players in the conference while her 0.53 goals per game also ranked fifth. Mueller scored twice including the overtime game-winner in a 3-2 victory at Sacred Heart on Sept. 25. She also scored the game-winning goal in the Owls’ 2-1 overtime upset of #13 Old Dominion on Oct. 7.
Villanova senior Francesca Bello is the lone Wildcat that was selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Bello was named co-captain of this season’s squad with junior Allison Sayia. In 2016, Bello appeared in 18 games for the Wildcats while starting 17 of them. She also led the team in goals with nine and points with 26. At the conclusion of last season, Bello was named to All-BIG EAST Second Team. This is the second season that she received preseason honors.
