Gwynedd Mercy University senior Melissa Russo is the Philafieldhockey Attacker of the Week after contributing 12 points this past weekend, leading the Griffins to their first 2-0 start since 2007. The reigning CSAC Player of the Year registered 4 goals and an assist on Friday in the Griffins seasoning opening 5-2 win over Misericordia. Despite being double teamed for most of their 3-2 win against Kings on Saturday, Russo was able to notch a goal and an assist, bot coming off penalty corners.
According to Head Coach, Laura Ann Lane, Russo has the ability to single handedly turn games around with her desire to score and to push her team to victory. “Melissa brings all she has day in and day out. Her skill and determination make her a strong offensive threat at any time.”
Coming off a 2016 campaign where she was named a NFHCA Third Team All-American, NFHCA First Team All -Region, and ECAC South Region Player of the Year, Russo and her teammates look to continue their stellar start and push to make a run at another CSAC title.
The Griffins have a three-game week beginning today against Delaware Valley (home opener, 7:00 PM), followed by Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham (9/9, home, 3:00 PM) and at Goucher (9/10, 1:00 PM).
