Week 9 featured story:
Little Flower High School for Girls’ senior Serena Pisacano is the PhilaFH Student Athlete of the Week.
This multitalented and versatile athlete can do it all on the field hockey pitch. Primarily a midfielder, Pisacano will switch to defense if Little Flower has the lead, and is even used as a backup goalie if needed. Piscano is a second-year captain and has earned back-to-back honors as Second Team All-Catholic Squad in the Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL). This year, Pisacano was instrumental in the team’s Philadelphia Catholic League playoffs berth.
Field hockey is just the beginning of Pisacano’s athletic prowess. As a member of the cross country team, Pisacano has placed on the 1st Team and 2nd Team All-Catholic squads and qualified for the PIAA State Championship in Hershey, PA. This year, Pisacano placed 7th in the PCL in the midst of her field hockey team’s playoff run. While on the Indoor Track and Field team at Little Flower, Pisacano earned 2nd and 3rd Team All-Catholic Honors in relays and individual races. Last, but certainly not least, she was voted to the 3rd Team All-Catholic of the PCL in lacrosse for two years. In addition to these honors, Pisacano is the Athletic Association Treasurer and was the school’s winner for the Wendy’s High School Heisman program.
Piscano’s athletic accomplishments are enough to make heads turn, but her academic success and work outside the classroom are equally amazing. While taking AP English Literature, AP Calculus, AP US History as well as many other honors and AP courses all four years of high school, she has maintained a 3.7 GPA which ranks her in the top 20% of her class. Her other school involvement includes president of the school newspaper membership in the TV Club.
On the arts side of school, Pisacano has been cast in Little Flower’s high school musicals for years, twice as the lead, and also participated in Father Judge’s theater department’s spring musical. She is also a member of the school’s orchestra and used her musical talent to create Little Flower’s first-ever school marching/pep band where she co-produced and directed the band while also handling recruitment and organizing music.
Outside of school, Pisacano also actively involved in Girl Scouts participating in various community service projects such as Toys for Tots, preparing Thanksgiving meals, and Baby Bundles. She won a Girls Scouts Silver Award for starting a musical production at her grade school that now occurs annually. Pisacano’s most recent service project won her the Girl Scout Gold Award focusing on healthy living and included teaching neighborhood kids how to play field hockey.
Pisacano’s honors and awards keep rolling in, but her contributions to the community go above and beyond. Even with all her activities and heavy academic load, she continues to push herself and find time to help wherever she can. Pisacano is currently pursuing opportunities to play field hockey in college; any program would be lucky to land a well-rounded and talented student athlete like herself.
