Week 2 featured story:
Plymouth Whitemarsh High School is the PhilaFH Team of the Week after a 4-0 jumpstart, including three shutouts. More so, the Colonials earn the honor for extending their phenomenal Suburban One American League winning streak to an astounding 28. PW’s hot start includes victories against Upper Moreland 5-0, Wissahickon 1-0, Lower Merion 3-1 and Springfield (Mont.) 5-0.
The most recent win against Springfield marks the eighth consecutive shutout victory at home and a thirteen-game home unbeaten streak (12-0-1) where the squad has outscored opponents 65-7. To date, Plymouth-Whitemarsh has scored in 40 straight games, with a 163-49 advantage over their competitors.
And, as if those streaks weren’t impressive enough, Plymouth Whitemarsh has now notched 28 straight wins in the SOL American and four consecutive conference titles. Dating back to 2014, the Lady Colonials are 65-14-2 overall and 55-2-1 in the SOL, outscoring opponents 299-101 with 36 shutouts. Hard to believe but the last time PW was shutout at home was October 23, 2013, where number 14 seed Hatboro-Horsham upset the number 3 seeded PW 2-0 in the second round of the District 1 AAA playoffs.
Last year – the first year under Coach Charise Halteman — the Lady Colonials earned the #7 seed in District 1 AAA, availing them a first round bye in districts playoffs. They went on to defeat 23rd seed Central Bucks South in round two; it was PW’s first second-round district win in at least 10 years. The following week, the Colonials dropped to #2 seed, Conestoga in the quarterfinal and then ended the season in a tough playback loss at Central Bucks East, where they could have qualified for the state playoffs.
“The early success of our 2017 season is really built on a tradition of hard work, high expectations, and a passion for the sport instilled by the many PW hockey alum that have come before,” shared Halteman. “Our ten seniors have carried on this tradition and done a great job to motivate this year’s team and set a positive tone for the season. We have seven returning starters this season, a number of players with varsity experience, and some talented newcomers that take a lot of pride in playing PW hockey. Although we are excited about our initial wins against league opponents this season, our focus has always been to take each practice and game one day at a time. The players know that it can be a long and grueling season to play league opponents twice and play a competitive non-league schedule, so they are willing to work hard to consistently play at a high level. Winning our league has not guaranteed success in the post-season, so it is important that we treat each game as a new opportunity to get better and prepare for the long road ahead. Our ultimate goal is to make it to the State tournament. We’ve fallen short of this goal in the past, and so our players have never been ‘satisfied’ with a winning season. They are always working to become better hockey players to get to this next level. At this point in the season, we are working on corner execution, making the most of offensive opportunities in the circle, and our transition game on defense. With that said, it has been such a pleasure to coach a group of young women who take their sport seriously, but have also found a way to create a family environment where fun and laughter go hand-in-hand with hard work. We are certainly enjoying and celebrating our wins, but we continue to look forward to the competitive season ahead!”
