The 2016 National Futures Championship (NFC) came to a close yesterday after nine days of stiff competition from the country’s elite players in U-14, U-16 and U-19 divisions. The NFC was held at The Home of Hockey, Spooky Nook Sports, Lancaster, PA.
The U-19 division capped the tournament, running from June 26-29 with ten teams and 200 players in action. Team Athens (Region 5) secured 2nd place; 14 of the team’s 20 players are from Phila-area high schools and/or clubs. Congratulations to the winning team; Phila-area players are highlighted: Kelsey Farkas (Merion Mercy/WC Eagles), Cadera Smith (CB West/Mystx), Mya Christopher (WC Eagles), Hannah Ackers (X-Calibur), Meredith Sholder, Kelee Lepage (X-Calibur), Madalyn Hosler (X-Calibur), Cassie Sumfest (WC Eagles), Alexis Horst, Bryn Boylan (CB West/FSC), Caroline McGovern (Council Rock South), Makayla Gallen (Cardinal O’Hara/WC Eagles), Alicia Cooperman, Jordan Olenginski, Kendra Sykes (Pope John Paul II/Viper), Taylor Alba, Meredith Ross (Conestoga/WC Eagles), Brianna O’Donnell (North Penn/FSC), Katie Jean (X-Calibur) and Shelby Querry. The team was coached by Stacey Bean.
For eighteen Phila-area athletes competing at the NFC U-19 division, the journey through the USA Field Hockey pipeline will continue as they have been invited to advance to the USA Junior National Camp (JNC).
The JNC, to held at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster County, Pa. from July 3-6, is the premier camp for Under-21 athletes comprised of the top 80-100 players in the country as selected from the National Futures Championship (NFC) and the Young Women’s National Championship (YWNC). Based on their performance at JNC, these athletes may earn selection to additional USA Field Hockey programs including the U-19 and U-21 Women’s Junior National Teams.
Forty U-19 athletes were selected for the JNC; 18 are from Phila-area high schools and/or clubs including:
