Six Phila-area high school players reached real milestones this fall when they recorded 100 career goals. Another player recorded her 100th in ’15 and yet another reached the landmark of 100 career assists this fall. Here’s the scoop on these remarkable Phila-area players:
Dock Mennonite Academy
heading to Liberty University
Bolton scored her 100th goal on Senior Night — also her 18th birthday. She scored with the time going out on a corner to put the game into overtime, and an eventual win.
Michelle Waldspurger, Dock Coach: “The last four year has been an amazing experience. Jill has been the heart and soul of Dock field hockey – winning many games on her bullet corner shots. Her career stats stand at 111 goals, 39 assists, and 37 defensive saves. What Jill has brought to Dock field hockey program is a will to win, a drive to be the best, and the belief we can achieve anything. She now leaves Dock as the all-time best field hockey player ever and to all of us, we will remember all the great memories. She had led the way to 4 BAL league titles, district playoffs each year, and ending this year in the state playoffs. We wish Jill well as she heads to Liberty next year!”
Academy of Notre Dame
heading to Saint Joseph’s University
Maguire scored her 100th goal on Senior Day against Penn Charter (11/3/16).
Coach Adele Williams: “Quinn has being a 4-year starter on varsity and has consistently performed at a high level. Reaching this milestone is certainly a huge achievement given the competitive schedule we play each year. Quinn also contributed with 69 career assists, showing the selfless player that she is. She epitomizes what a team player should be. Her speed and stick work have dazzled over the 4 years and she has been a joy to watch and coach. I couldn’t be more proud of her achievement.”
Council Rock South
heading to Boston College
McGovern scored her 100th career goal in OT against Neshaminy on October 18, 2016. The game-winning goal was the goal that put CR South solely in first place in the SOL National division.
Coach Lisa Belz: “Caroline had an outstanding season. Aside from her reaching her 100 career goal mark and breaking the Lower Bucks record for most goals in a single season, she scored 3 game-winning goals in OT that helped our team win the league. She is a true team player. Her skills and expertise of the game helped so many of our players improve this season. She left quite an impression on the Council Rock South program, but Boston College is lucky to be getting such a skilled and motivated player.”
heading to play basketball at Drexel
Nihill scored her 100th on October 29, 2016.
committed to Princeton University
In November, Popper capped off a record-breaking season with 6 goals in the Patriots’ final game, an 8-0 victory over rival Penn Charter. Her 6th goal also marked her 100th career goal in only two seasons.
Coach Jackie Connard: “One-hundred goals is an incredible milestone for any hockey player in their high school career, and the fact that Sammy has achieved this in only 2 seasons (44 games) is unbelievable. Sammy set a school record last year of 44 goals in a single season, and followed that up with 56 goals this season. She’s tallied at least 2 goals in 16 of 21 games this season. Every week this fall, Popper has ranked #1 in goal scorers and point leaders among all Phila-area high school players from 111 area schools. Her final-season stats stand at: 56 goals (2.67 pg) and 15 assists for 127 points (6.05 pg).
Conestoga High School
headed to Michigan State University
Ross reached her 100th goal on a penalty stroke against Central League opponent, Radnor on September 15, 2016.
Conestoga Coach, Megan Smyth: “This season alone she tallied 48 goals and 8 assists. Her list of accomplishments is extensive and quite impressive. She has played an incredibly important role in every single Central League game all four years of her career, leading her team to a perfect 44-0 record against her Central League opponents. I have no doubt she will find great success at Michigan State next year. We will miss her greatly!”
The Agnes Irwin School
heading to Princeton University
Julianna Tornetta scored her 100th career goal last year, November 6, 2015, in an InterAc league game against Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. She is the second player in the school’s program history to reach this milestone along with her sister, Sophia Tornetta.
Alison Monzo, Agnes Irwin Coach: “Having scored her 100th career goal last year, Julianna hit a milestone very few field hockey players reach. This season she also shattered the record previously set by her sister, and became the all-time leading goal scorer in our program’s history. This is quite the feat on its own without having to balance the great honor and commitment to train with the USA National Team this fall. She has undoubtedly set the bar for excellent play this season and in her tenure at Agnes Irwin.”
Monsignor Bonner & Archbishop Pendergast High School
Heading to University of Delaware (2016 NCAA Champions)
Riley Dolan tallied her 100th career assist on October 14th during a game against Radnor High School, making school history.
Coach Joanne Dolan: “”Riley entered high school and was instantly plugged into the starting lineup in her first year. Riley had an immediate impact on the identity of the Bonner & Prendie team and was an instant team leader and the “go to” dominant player that received significant attention from every opposing team. Along with 114 career assists, Riley tallied 60 career goals from her midfield position and earned Philadelphia Catholic League MVP Honors. Riley is a born playmaker that makes everyone around her better. It’s the highest honor I can bestow on a player.”
