Philafieldhockey.com is pleased to present “Understanding the Game | Rules & Interpretation On-Field Seminar” for players, parents and coaches. The event will be held on Thursday, August 17 from 6:30-7:45pm. The location is to be announced; stay tuned. At the seminar, players and staff will serve as demonstrators, bringing the umpire’s calls to life and in turn, elevating your understanding of the game’s rules and nuances. Players, parents and coaches will leave with a stronger understanding of some of the most commonly misunderstood field hockey rules including: GK interference, aerial balls, obstruction, dangerous play, and hand balls. Cris Maloney, a renowned field hockey umpire and umpire educator, will lead the seminar in three areas: on-field live rules demos, a Q&A session, and effective on-field leadership for captains and players.
Maloney has presented his teaching methods at an IOC Olympic Solidarity Seminar for coaches from around the world and was a regional director of USAFH Futures Program where he helped to prepare its first curriculum. He is one of only a few USAFH Level II Umpire Coaches and has taught hundreds of new and experienced umpires from across the nation. Maloney started playing field hockey in 1975 and eventually played at the national level though he fell short of making the USA national men’s team that played in the 1984 Olympics. He was the assistant coach for teams that won gold medals at two USOC national events. He has been organizing youth and adult field hockey programs for boys and girls, men and women, since 1983.
Field Hockey: Understanding the Game, recently published, is available from Amazon or directly from Maloney’s field hockey website, UmpireHockey.com. Click here to order and receive free shipping.
The seminar is designed to be a great add-on to high school and middle school teams’ pre-season training, for coaches wanting a rules tune-up, and for parents who want to better enjoy their daughters’ games this fall by having a strong understanding of the rules of field hockey.
Registration is required and space is limited to ensure that all registrants have clear views of the demonstrations. CLICK here to register. Please note that the event is listed as “free” (to avoid paying online) but a $5 per person (player, parent or coach) or $40 per team fee will be collected at the field. (Coaches: Register your team with your name & approximate number of attendees.)
