After taking down two-time defending state champion Emmaus on Tuesday, Downingtown West wrapped up a stellar, record-breaking season at the PIAA AAA State Final, falling to #1 nationally ranked Penn Manor (28-0), 2-0.
The Penn Manor Comets got rolling at the sound of the whistle, dominating possession and securing two corners in under four minutes, the second of which they made count when Emma DeBerdine set up Bri Harsh. DeBerdine, a USA Field Hockey U-21 National Team player, led the Comets on both ends of the field and was equally successful in limiting West’s top hand, Romea Riccardo ball time in the midfield. Penn Manor’s second goal of the game came with less than :40 in the half when DeBerdine found Alyssa Schriver inside the circle. It would be the final goal for a team that had averaged 5 goals per game in the State Tournament — thanks to West’s strong defense.
West’s defense, led by Celina Riccardo, Anna Miller and Layne Garber came back swinging in the second half and shut out the Comets’ talented attack. West’s GK Caitin Coker (this week’s PhilaFH Defender of the Week) kept the Comets in check recording 9 saves, several brilliant — including one diving save that put the fans on their feet.
Offensively, the Whippets also created some opportunities — including 2 corners — led by JJ Smyth who worked the baseline, Claudia Jaszczak who re-defended with fervor, and Tatum Johnson. Midfielders Romea Riccardo, Ciana Riccardo and Taylor Orsi found more success the second half in feeding the ball to their line. But in the end, Downingtown West’s strong second half fell short to two stellar halves put together by Penn Manor.
Despite the loss, Downingtown West field hockey made school history, recording the best record in program history (25-1) and winning their first-ever District One title. Their brilliant season was in no way tarnished by today’s loss; the Whippets still shine. #PhilaFH
