Week 12 featured story:
Villa Maria’s Hannah Miller is the PhilaFH Attacker of the Week.
Miller has been a leading offensive force for the Villa Maria Hurricanes all fall and was at the top of her game on Saturday, scoring both of the team’s goals in the 2-1 win over Wyoming Valley West in the PIAA AA State Championship victory. The state title was the second in four years for Villa Maria and the finale of a stellar 24-1 season in which Miller led the Hurricanes in goals (45) and points (113).
Miller’s offensive stats also land the junior among the Top-10 of all high school players from 113 area high schools: #3 in points (4.52 per game), #4 in goals (1.80 per game) and #6 in assists (.96 per game).
In the state final, held at the Zephyr Sports Complex, Whitehall, Pa., Miller notched a goal in each of the halves, the first coming about three minutes in, on an assist from Erin Finley. Six minutes into the second half, Miller recorded the game-winner after running the baseline, dodging the goalkeeper, and placing it perfectly in the bottom right corner. Miller’s ability to play with poise under intense pressure and in steady rain was outstanding.
“To score both the goals today was just such an amazing feeling that I will for sure never forget,” said Miller. “I wouldn’t have done it without the support of the entire team behind me. It feels amazing being able to help my team achieve this state title in any way that I could!”
Villa Maria outscored their opponents 59-3 in post-season play. Miller recorded goals in seven of the team’s eight games – a total of 16 including two hat-tricks and one 4-goal game. She netted 8 goals for the Hurricanes in the state tournament and 8 in District One AA playoffs – which Villa won for the fourth consecutive season under Head Coach Daan Polders.
“Hannah played a really good state final and decided to be satisfied with gold only: she took ownership on the field and showed she really wanted it,” said Polders. “Hannah is a ‘gamer’: she turns it on on the field and you better be ready for that. Overall, Hannah can look back and be very satisfied with her season: scoring more than 40 goals and with a lot of assists, she was not only successful as an individual but also made other players successful. This is part of our success.”
Miller has another year ahead with Villa before heading to #2 Duke University in the fall of 2018, where she will continue her field hockey career. Miller is also a member of the USA Field Hockey U-17 National Team.
